Pianist, keyboard artist, arranger and composer, he is a third generation musician born in Louisiana. Long one of the "go to guys", he has amassed an impressive array of credentials. "Beas" has recorded and/or performed with: Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Dianne Reeves, Lee Ritenour, Steely Dan, John Patitucci, James Brown and Hubert Laws. He recently toured with Queen Latifah as Music Director. All songs written by John Beasley except "Skippy" (Thelonious Monk).
Pianist John Beasley's CD straddles the artificial boundary between "mainstream" and "contemporary" jazz. Beasley (sometimes hinting at McCoy Tyner and the acoustic Herbie Hancock) takes many fine solos and makes expert use of Bob Sheppard's bass clarinet on a few of the tracks; several of the more infectious grooves are quite memorable. Thelonious Monk's "Skippy" and the moody ballad "Until Now" are among the highlights but each of the ten selections is worth hearing. The supporting cast includes Steve Tavaglione on reeds, Freddie Washington or John Patitucci on bass, drummer Teri Lyne Carrington and percussionist Bill Summers. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at Signet Sound Studios, Hollywood, California.
Personnel: John Beasley (piano, keyboards), Steve Tavaglione (saxophone, EWI, flute), Bob Sheppard (bass clarinet, alto flute, tenor saxophone), Freddie Washington, John Patitucci (bass), Terri Lynn Carrington (drums), Bill Summers, Munyungo (percussion).
